Extending ACA premium credits: What do Georgia’s leaders think?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, currently offers premium tax credits to assist those who struggle to afford health insurance, decreasing monthly payments for those who purchase their own health insurance. During the pandemic, these tax credits were  temporarily expanded, qualifying more individuals for benefits. These credits are set to expire at the end of 2025 unless Congress extends them, which many Democrats are advocating to extend, while some Republicans would prefer to see the credits expire. The federal government is currently in a shutdown, something each side attributes to the other, and both would probably agree has something to do with the healthcare situation.  Here is what our state’s leaders are endorsing:

Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff is strongly in favor of extending these credits, co-sponsoring the Health Care Affordability Act of 2025—a bill that would extend the premium tax credits. Ossoff continues to voice his concern over the impact letting these credits expire would cause in increasing Georgians’ health insurance premiums.

“More than 20 million Americans will see their health insurance premiums double next year without Congressional action, while President Trump continues to refuse to work on a solution,” said Ossoff.

Ossoff cites recent polling and analysis from the non-partisan health policy group KFF, which found that premiums could increase by 114% on average if credits expire. Additionally, he cites  a new KFF report stating that 78% of Americans agree with extending the credits to support his motion to extend these credits.

“I remain ready to work with my Republican colleagues to resolve this unnecessary crisis as swiftly as possible,” said Ossoff.

Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who recently spoke at a Fayette County Republican Party event, while not a fan of ACA in general, is in support of extending the credits as well. Sharing in a post on social media platform X on Monday she emphasized that while she would not support providing health care benefits to undocumented immigrants, letting the credits expire would affect her own children.

“I’m going to go against everyone on this issue because when the tax credits expire this year my own adult children’s insurance premiums for 2026 are going to DOUBLE along with all the wonderful families and hard-working people in my district,” she shared in the post. “No I’m not towing the party line on this, or playing loyalty games. I’m a Republican and won’t vote for illegals to have any tax payer funded healthcare or benefits. I’m AMERICA ONLY!!!,” she added.

Additionally, The Citizen received a statement from Congressman Brian Jack of Georgia’s 3rd District regarding his thoughts on the matter.

“As President Ronald Reagan once said, a government program is the nearest thing to eternal life on Earth, and Senate Democrats are trying to make permanent these temporary government-run, tax-payer funded healthcare subsidies,” said Congressman Jack. “But, Congress can’t even negotiate or come to a resolution on this policy dispute until Senate Democrats reopen the government.”

For now, the debate continues. In the midst of the government shutdown, this topic remains at the forefront of the discussion highlighting the need for a solution in order to pass the federal budget and reopen the government.

Side Stepping Strawman, maybe follow the money. The Democrats raise way more money than the Republicans. The Dems are the ultimate elitists. But this is way way over your head I am sure. Osoff the ultimate example of what I am saying. And these elitists play all you wannabe bleeding hearts like a cheap violin.

If you’re worried about the elites in government tilting policy to benefit the wealthy few, actually look at the tax cuts and incentives that favor millionaires and billionaires — that’s not the Democrats. How can you be so naive?
The president is a billionaire funded by the wealthiest man in the history of the world and the vice president is a Yale graduate funded the other wealthiest man Peter Thiel. Who in their inauguration had special seats for their Oligarch partners. You have to be freaking kidding me, do you have any sense.

Btw, we now have the VP calling Trump Hitler, The Secretary Of Health calling Trump a Fascist, and three of the most respected generals call Trump a fascist. They said all of this before Trump started sending the Stasi into our cities and starting wars without any proof or process.

    2. TheodoreDwightWeld

Do you actually know what people like Bernie Sanders, AOC, or James Talarico actually believe? Their platform is literally a fight against oligarchs and tons of policy for the working class and middle class.

You republicans are so weird voting against your own interests since the civil rights movement. A good analogy would be when folks cemented in public pools so black folks would be able to use them. So rather than everyone benefitting, no one did. Reminds me of a Lyndon Johnson quote. “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”

Let not forget Brian Jack is protecting pedophiles by voting to kill the Epstein bill.

    1. TheodoreDwightWeld

So by proxy, if you support Republicans or Brian Jack to be more specific—you are also protecting pedophiles.

      1. drdrakeramoray

Side Stepping Strawman, you are a broken record and absolutely no credibility

        1. TheodoreDwightWeld

The article literally quoted a pedophile protector and a woman that thinks Jewish Space Lasers cause forest fires and you are saying I don’t have credibility?

          1. drdrakeramoray

Side Stepping Strawman, you are a complete idiot, you need to get a room with some purple haired nose wearing trannies, along with Stanger Than Osoff, Rabble Ben, and just do whatever you them like to do

          2. TheodoreDwightWeld

I think we would all like to defeat fascism and you’re kinda in the way.

You keep making the most bigoted un-American comments and I just laugh, knowing you support a rapist pedophile and have absolutely zero respect for democracy.

You don’t have two feet to stand on sir. You don’t actually believe in anything, you are just anti everything if it doesn’t fit the intolerant world you wish.

  3. George Burdell

Mr Tucker – I respect your right to disagree, but aside from crossing your arms and holding your breath, what’s the solution to our Democrat Senators’ refusal to reopen the federal government, and blocking progress on passing a budget?

Republicans did not lard the bill for temporary funding of government with numerous cuts or pet projects that they can now discard to give you your “compromise”. The compromise IS the “clean” bill that the House already passed to keep things going while the total budget is worked out. The compromise that previously worked 13 times under Biden.

As I wrote above, “The solution is clear. Ossoff, Warnock and other Democrat Senators need to vote to reopen government, and then to negotiate a full budget under regular order. Republicans have stated they are open to some adjustments to Obamacare subsidies for Americans, but only as part of the give and take of an overall budget.”

So Republicans have already given you your “signal”; They offer to continue with the current spending while negotiating the Obamacare subsidies and Medicare loopholes Democrats demand, as our democracy and Constitution have laid out, under regular order.

But no, Ossoff, Warnock and other Democrat Senators are like petulant children: agree now to spend $1.5 trillion we don’t have, and add in loopholes that will allow illegal aliens and able-bodied Americans to get federal funding for Medicare, or essential federal services and employees get hurt.

Talk to me again about threats to democracy, starting with this situation.

  4. George Burdell

OK, neighbors. It’s time for a serious discussion. America is being hurt by the federal government shutdown, and it’s about to get worse.

Early in the shutdown, essential federal workers and social programs were paid from budget balances, but those funds are exhausted now. Soon, programs that support food for children will run dry, and our military families won’t have rent money.

It didn’t have to get to this at all. Republicans offered a “clean” (no added Republican budget wants) renewal of the current budget in order to keep negotiating the full annual budget, and it passed in the House.

Yet Democrats in the Senate, including Ossoff and Warnock from Georgia, voted no and continue to vote no. They prefer a closed government to the option of continuing to work on a real, regular order budget.

Keep in mind, Republicans voted to keep the government open like this 13 times under Biden.

For those “No Kings!” protesters who howl “Our democracy is under attack!”, you should focus your attention here. Do you really believe Congress will ever pass a budget under regular order if one side or the other holds the process hostage like this for their own special interests?

The Democrats’ special interests this time are the renewal of TEMPORARY Obamacare subsidies passed as part of COVID relief that have sun-setted as planned. To do this, they require $1.5 TRILLION in additional spending, money that our country does not have without massive reductions elsewhere.

Dems also demand removal of current law that prohibits states from “playing games” to get federal funding for healthcare coverage for illegals and able-bodied Americans, before they will agree to reopen government and resume work on the rest of the budget.

The solution is clear. Ossoff, Warnock and other Democrat Senators need to vote to reopen government, and then to negotiate a full budget under regular order. Republicans have stated they are open to some adjustments to Obamacare subsidies for Americans, but only as part of the give and take of an overall budget.

There are times when “both sides”, Republicans and Democrats, are playing games in DC. This time there’s a clear cause: Senate Democrats. We all need to get on the phone or email to Senators Ossoff and Warnock to tell them to put Americans first and vote to end the Democrats’ federal government shutdown.

    1. Doug Tucker

I disagree Mr. Burdell. There is no path to provide affordable healthcare for the millions who need it. I personally do not look at healthcare as a “right,” but I also know that we should not abruptly shut off healthcare to those who already rely on it. Our two senators, as well as every “democrat” and conscientious representative (upper and lower chambers) should continue blocking the budget passage until the “MAGAs” signal compromise.
